Korean carmaker Hyundai is set to launch the Kona Electric in India on July 9. It will not only be the first electric SUV for the brand in our market, it will also be the first all-electric, long range EV in the country. In terms of design, the Kona Electric looks similar to the standard Kona sold overseas, minus the front grille and some changes to the bumper.
Globally, the Kona Electric is available in two versions. The first comes with a 39kWh battery that can deliver a range of just over 300km while the other version gets a bigger battery pack of 64kWh and has a range close to 480km. It is not yet clear if Hyundai will bring both these versions to India or just one.
The 39kWh version has a power output of 136PS and 395Nm and can sprint from 0-100kmph in just 9.7 seconds, before going on to hit a top speed of 155kmph. Meanwhile, the bigger 64kWh version has a power output of 204PS and 395Nm. The Kona Electric also supports fast charging and the batteries can go from zero to 80 per cent charge in just 54 minutes.
On the features front, the Kona Electric offers all the creature comforts one has come to expect from modern cars today. It gets an 8-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, ventilated seats, six airbags, blind-spot detection, ABS, hill-start assist, reversing camera, and more.
Hyundai is expected to price the Kona Electric in the region of Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). It will only be available in select cities initially. The Kona Electric will have a direct rival later this year in the form of MG eZS, which will be launched by December 2019.
