Before diving into the details, let’s take a look at the mechanicals of the two sub-4m SUVs.

Dimensions:

• The Nexon is wider and taller than the Venue.
• The Venue, however, has a longer wheelbase.
• Both the SUVs have an identical boot space of 350 litres.

Engine:

Diesel

• The Nexon’s bigger 1.5-litre unit produces more power and torque than the Venue’s 1.4-litre unit.
• When it comes to fuel economy, the Venue takes the lead.
• Where the Venue is available with a 6-speed MT only, the Nexon gets an option of 6-speed AMT as well.

Petrol

• Where the Venue is available with two petrol engines to choose from, the Nexon gets only one.
• The Venue’s 1.2-litre engine is the least powerful unit here. The 1.0-litre unit, on the other hand, is the most powerful engine. It also has the highest torque output.
• Both the SUVs are available with a manual as well as an automatic transmission to choose from. However, while the Nexon comes with an AMT unit, the Venue gets a dual-clutch automatic transmission which is regarded as a more advanced tech as it is likely to shift gears at a quicker pace compared to an AMT.

Verdict: There’s hardly any difference between the Venue and the Nexon in their respective base variants. If you’re to pick one, you can go for the Nexon if you often load large stuff in the boot as it gets foldable rear seats. The Venue’s day/night IRVM can come in handy while driving at night. If you’re on the road most of the time after sunset, you can consider the Venue as well.

Hyundai Venue S (1.2L) vs Tata Nexon XM

Common Features (over previous variants)

Safety: Speed sensing door locks.

Exterior: Wheel covers and external antenna.

Infotainment: Both the SUVs get a 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth and steering mounted controls. However, the one in the Tata is from Harman Kardon, which should have an edge over the system in the Venue.

Comfort and Convenience: Rear power windows, remote central locking and electrically adjustable ORVMs.

Body coloured door handles and ORVMs, day/night IRVM, rear AC vents and cooled glove box.

What Tata Nexon XM offers over the Hyundai Venue (1.2L) S

Verdict:

Again, there’s nothing substantial that separates the Venue and the Nexon here. With Tata not offering body-coloured door handles and ORVMs on the Nexon XM, it would look more stripped out than the Venue. The Venue also gets a few more features, and that is why we’d suggest you to go for the Hyundai.

Hyundai Venue S (1.0L) vs Tata Nexon XZ

Verdict: The Venue’s 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is about a lakh rupees more expensive than the 1.2-litre unit. As a result, while the Venue has gotten more expensive, its feature list is still the same. The Nexon is our clear pick here. For a premium of just Rs 10,000, it gets a lot more features compared to the Venue including a touchscreen infotainment system and auto AC.

Infotainment: Where the Nexon comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the Venue gets an 8-inch unit. However, both the units get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Verdict: The Venue is the more expensive car here, but it totally justifies the premium over the Nexon with the additional equipment it gets. So, if you can spend as much as Rs 9.5 lakh, we’d suggest you pick the Venue.
