Hyundai India, the country's second largest car manufacturer has products in almost all the segments, starting from small hatchback to luxurious saloon. But, they lack in sports utility vehicle segment, where it only has Santa Fe - a luxurious sports utility vehicle. From the past year or so, the compact SUV segment is growing at a brisk pace, and all the companies are focusing on the same to improve their market sales.
Renault Duster is already a huge hit for the Indian arm of French auto maker, and Ford is coming with EcoSport, which has already created a lot of buzz in the market. So, it is now essential for the Korean car maker to enter into the compact SUV segment, and the company has already started working on the same. The clear evidence on the same has been spotted on the Korean streets. Hyundai's compact SUV test mule was spotted in South Korea recently.
The spyshots of the test mule clearly suggest that it is a compact SUV. However, nothing officially came from the company's end. According to us, it is expected to be around 4-metre mark. The vehicle is also speculated to get a 1.2-litre Kappa2 petrol engine and a 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine, which also does duty in few of the other Hyundai cars in India. The compact SUV will also go on sale in Brazil and European markets to compete against Duster and EcoSport, and might get different powertrains for the same.
It is expected that the compact SUV will hit Indian shores by the end of 2014. As of now, Hyundai is testing next-generation i10 and i20 hatchbacks, and the compact SUV will be launched after the introductions of the two. The car will adorn the Hyundai's fluidic styling, which is also seen on the company's other vehicles in India.
This is all what we have for now, stay tuned to CarDekho for all the latest updates on the same, Cheers!
