Renault has decided that India will remain the sole production hub for Kwid hatchback. This was confirmed by Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, while speaking at the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Soon to be exported to the world, Renault Kwid will be manufactured exclusively in India and will be shipped out of Indian shores. The Kwid has received a staggering response from the Indian automotive market and is keeping up its momentum.
The car has over 97% localization in the production process, which helped the company in its aggressive pricing in Rs. 2.56 - 3.53 lac bracket (ex-showroom, New Delhi). With such competitive pricing, the Renault Kwid has managed to receive over 85,000 bookings. It features a 799cc 3-cylinder petrol motor that produces 53bhp and 72Nm of max torque. This motor is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The car will soon receive the AMT treatment and an elder sibling. Owing to its success, Renault will feature the AMT and 1-litre versions of the Kwid at the 2016 Auto Expo. The 1000cc Kwid was recently spied in Brazil and is expected to be launched in India, probably sometime during the Auto Expo.
In mid-December, Renault had decided to increase the production of the Kwid, since bookings for the car had crossed 50,000 figure. The production will increase from 6,000 to 10,000 units a month from February or March 2016. Sumit Sawhney, managing director of Renault India said, "The Kwid has been a great success and we are ramping up the capacity to meet demand. With 98 per cent local content, we along with our vendors, are cranking up on volumes. The Chennai rains were a dampener, but we are working overtime to meet the demand."
