Does the Kia outperform the smaller XUV300? Or is it the other way around? Let’s find out
Mahindra introduced a new turbocharged petrol engine with the launch of the XUV300 earlier this year. The new Kia Seltos’ engine list also includes a turbo-petrol motor. While the Mahindra is a sub-4m SUV, the Kia is a compact SUV. We tested both cars in real-world conditions to find out which one fares better.

The Kia’s performance advantage is apparent in our acceleration tests. The Seltos is much quicker to accelerate than the XUV 300 in every aspect. Its three seconds quicker to reach a 100kmph, almost four seconds quicker to accelerate from 40kmph to 100kmph in 4th gear and nearly two seconds quicker to do 30kmph to 80kmph in 3rd gear.

Both cars feature disc brakes on all four wheels. The Seltos can brake sooner than the XUV 300 when stopping from a 100kmph. However, when braking from 80kmph, the XUV 300 stops a full meter before the Seltos.

The XUV 300’s smaller turbocharged petrol engine is more frugal than the Seltos in city driving conditions. However, the highway mileage is almost 4kmpl fewer than the Kia’s larger engine. The XUV300 falls short of its claimed figures in both circumstances.

When calculating the average efficiency of the Kia Seltos and Mahindra XUV 300 in both city and highway driving conditions, the larger SUV happens to be more frugal. In a balance of city and highway mileage and with predominant highway use, the Seltos compact SUV does more kilometres per litre of fuel than the XUV 300. For mostly city driving, the efficiency figures between the two are very similar, but the Seltos is just a tad more efficient.
