#LookBack2014: Top 5 Selling Sedans in India

Sedans in India have always been termed as a status symbol and the owners like to seat behind rather driving these cocoons of comfort. However, the sub-4 meter version of sedans have changed the game forever. Now the situation is different and the comfort factor has taken a back seat, while value for money quotient is the main driving force for the segment. The Swift Dzire was the first of its like, which hit the sweet spot, after it Amaze, Xcent and Zest are also gaining from the same formula. The 2014 also witnessed the return of the legend- The 2014 Honda City with fuel efficient 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Maruti Suzuki also introduced Ciaz as the SX4 replacement in the country.

On the higher side, the Corolla Altis and Octavia have again sparked the sales of the D-Segment sedans, while the D+ segment is going like always. At the higher end of the sedans, all the Mercs, Audis and BMWs are performing well, while brands like Volvo are also improving. All and all, the 2014 have seen a return of sedans on road and its time to look back and check out the top-5 selling sedans in 2014. 

1) Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

India’s largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki retailed more than 1,93,680 units of its compact sedan Swift DZire. The car lock horns with the likes of Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent. Available in both the fuel trims, the petrol model is powered by 1.2-litre K-Series engine while the diesel model houses 1.3-litre DDiS engine. 

2) Honda City

With the introduction of fuel efficient i-DTEC engine, City grabs the second position in the top five list. Launched in January, the Japanese automaker sold 71,314 units of City till November. The potent 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine churns an output of 100PS and delivers a fuel economy of 26kmpl.

3) Honda Amaze

Honda with its Amaze has been placed third in the list as the automaker retailed 60,325 units in the month of January to November. Recently, the compact sedan Amaze gained the Guinness World Record in the category of ‘Longest journey by a car in a single country’. Powered by the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine and 1.5-litre i-DTEC mill, the car is favorite among the daily commuters and young professionals. 

4) Hyundai Xcent

Hyundai Xcent with its sales figure of 48,410 units grabs the fourth position in our list. The compact sedan was launched in the month of March with potent 1.1 litre advanced 2nd generation U2 CRDi diesel and 1.2 litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine. With features like rear A/C vents, smart key with push start button, rear parking camera & sensors, the compact sedan has an edge over its competitors. 

5) Hyundai Verna

With the sales figure of 32,238 units from January to November, Verna from Hyundai has been ranked 5th in the list. The car is based on Hyundai’s fluidic design philosophy which is been liked by several. The car embraces projector headlamps and daytime running LEDs while mechanically it is offered with 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engine in both petrol and diesel trims.

Other cars such as Etios Sedan, Tata Zest, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz were also sold in decent numbers. In 2015, we expect the facelift version of Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire along with some new introductions in the compact sedan segment.
