The 5-door Thar will likely get many more safety, comfort and convenience features making it a premium lifestyle offroader
One of the biggest and most-anticipated SUV launches in 2024 will be the 5-door Mahindra Thar. While it will still have all the essentials for offroading as the 3-door Thar, multiple spy shots have confirmed it will be offered as a better-equipped lifestyle offroader over the latter. Here’s a list of all the premium features that the 5-door Thar will get over its 3-door counterpart:
Sunroof
Probably one of the most desired features on the 3-door Thar was a sunroof, which Mahindra will finally be offering on its elongated version with the metal hard top. That said, the 5-door Thar will only get a single-pane sunroof and not a full panoramic unit.
Dual-zone AC
Mahindra is also expected to provide the longer-wheelbase Thar with dual-zone climate control as seen on its modern and more premium SUV offerings like the XUV700 and Scorpio N. The carmaker will also be equipping the 5-door Thar with rear AC vents, a feature that’s missing on the existing 3-door model.
Rear Disc Brakes
While it was believed that the offroader’s 3-door version could get this safety tech as hinted by a couple of spy images, it still has not made it to the market. It looks like Mahindra is finally set to equip those rear disc brakes on a Thar, although only on its longer-wheelbase version.

Bigger Touchscreen
The current Thar, since its launch in 2020, has offered a 7-inch touchscreen system with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Now, its 5-door sibling is set to get a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen from the XUV400 EV which should also be provided with wireless smartphone connectivity.
Digital Driver Display
Another premium feature that’s set to be available on the 5-door Thar is a digital driver display (likely a 10.25-inch unit) from the XUV400 EV as confirmed from its spy shots. The current Thar, on the other hand, comes with an analogue setup with a coloured MID in the centre.
Electrically Operated Fuel Lid Opener
One of the minor inconveniences that Thar owners have been facing is the opening of the fuel lid, which needs to be opened manually with the key. It looks like Mahindra has taken cognisance of the same and will be equipping the longer-wheelbase SUV with an electric release for the fuel lid opening. Its button is positioned on the control panel located to the right side of the steering wheel.
Reversing Camera With Front Parking Sensors
The 5-door Thar will be expanding the safety features as well, including a reversing camera. Mahindra will also be offering it with front parking sensors that are unavailable on the 3-door Thar.
Rear Centre Armrest
A small but worthwhile comfort and convenience feature that will be offered on the 5-door model over the 3-door Thar is a rear centre armrest. As the former has two individual seats in the second row, it only offered arm support on either side but it was not possible to fit one in the centre. That said, it will be possible in the 5-door Thar due to the provision of bench seats for the second row.
Six Airbags
Mahindra could also take the opportunity to not only introduce six airbags on the upcoming longer-wheelbase Thar, but offer them as standard to comply with the government’s upcoming safety kit mandate. The current model, for now, only gets dual front airbags.
360-degree Camera
The 5-door Thar could also come with a 360-degree camera, which will make it easier and more convenient to manoeuver it in tight parking spaces and even prove to be useful while taking on off-road challenges.
These are some of the premium features that are currently unavailable on the 3-door Thar which are expected on the 5-door version. What else do you think Mahindra should equip onto the longer Thar? Let us know in the comments.
