The Thar is equipped with new petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit (150PS/up to 320Nm), and the diesel engine is a 2.2-litre unit (130PS/300Nm). Both get a 6-speed manual as standard and an optional 6-speed automatic. A 4x4 drivetrain is standard across both powertrains.
The only direct rivals of the Mahindra Thar are the upcoming 2021 Force Gurkha and the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
