Its retuned 2.2-litre mHAWK engine is likely to produce around 170PS of power and at least 350Nm of torque
The Mahindra XUV500 has been with us since 2011. Over the years, it has received a number of updates including a new engine option in 2016, a mid-life update in 2015, and special variants like the Sportz Edition, which was launched earlier this year. Now though, reliable sources from within the company have confirmed that the Indian auto giant is working on a more powerful version of its flagship offering in India.
By what we’ve come to learn, Mahindra will turn the screws on its existing 2.2-litre, turbocharged mHAWK diesel engine to harness around 170PS of power, with torque figures hovering around the 350-360Nm mark. That means a bump in power and torque figures by 30PS and 20-30Nm respectively. What’s more, the company is likely to launch this version around the 2017 festive period.
It’ll surely be the most exciting avatar of the current-gen Mahindra XUV500. In terms of power, it will pounce ahead of its direct rivals, the Tata Hexa and the 2.4-litre Toyota Innova Crysta, and come close to the Hyundai Tucson, which is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with 185PS/400Nm at its disposal.
Our sources have also confirmed that the all-new XUV500 is at least two years away from making an entry to the market. That kind of time period will give the company enough feedback for the newly tuned engine before it decides to finalise the recipe for the second-gen XUV500.
The Mahindra XUV500 has always been one of the most feature-rich cars in its segment. Recently, the company upped its infotainment system by adding Android Auto, connected apps and Ecosense. Whether Mahindra will add more to its package in its most powerful version is still unknown.
