The Mahindra XUV400 has been unveiled as the carmaker's first long-range electric vehicle (EV). The EV, which has a notable degree of commonality with the XUV300, has a longer footprint than the latter and comes with a range of visual and cosmetic differentiations.
The carmaker will begin offering test drives of the XUV400 from December, while it will start accepting bookings for the car in January, 2023. Customer deliveries will commence towards the end of the same month.
Being an electric SUV, Mahindra has provided it with a closed off front grille (featuring triangular copper elements and Mahindra’s ‘Twin Peaks’ logo, also in copper) which is flanked by the same LED headlight clusters as the XUV300.
The only noticeable difference is that unlike the subcompact XUV300, the LED DRLs on the XUV400 don’t extend into the bumper, and they are finished in copper. The EV hasn’t been equipped with fog lamps.
While the LED taillight clusters are similar to that of the XUV300, Mahindra has tweaked the internal elements. The XUV400 EV also features multiple copper highlights including in the side moulding and is seen sporting a copper-coloured roof and alloy wheels borrowed from its subcompact sibling.
The XUV400 will be available in five colour options: Arctic Blue, Everest White, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black and Infinity Blue. Some shades can also be teamed with a copper-coloured roof.
Here’s a look at the XUV400's dimensions compared to other similarly priced electric SUVs:

The XUV400 is longer than almost all of its rivals save for the MG ZS EV and also has the longest wheelbase of 2,600mm, matching that of the Hyundai Kona Electric. The Mahindra EV has a boot capacity of up to 418 litres.
Inside, the cabin also features some copper accents along the side AC vents and the AC controls and a new XUV700-like steering wheel with Mahindra’s new logo finished in copper. Apart from that, it still has the same instrument cluster (with an updated EV-specific MID) and the same seven-inch touchscreen with EV-related display.
The XUV400 is packed with features including a single-pane sunroof, over 60 connected car features and a manual AC. Its safety kit consists of six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), cornering brake control, ISOFIX child seat anchorages and multiple active safety features as well.
Mahindra has equipped the XUV400 EV with a 39.4kWh battery pack. The EV offers an ARAI-rated range of 456km and its battery can be juiced up from 0 to 80 per cent in 50 minutes with a 50kW DC fast charger.
When charged using a 7.2kW AC wallbox charger, it takes 6 hours 30 mins for a full charge while a 3.3kW charger requires 13 hours to do the same job. The XUV400 can do the 0 to 100kmph dash in 8.3 seconds, and hit a capped top speed of 150kmph. The carmaker has given it frequency selective damping (FSD), the same as the XUV700, and Scorpio N and the EV also has a 'single-pedal' mode.
The carmaker will launch the XUV400 in January, 2023 and it is expected to be priced from Rs 17 lakh to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). Its prime rivals are the Tata Nexon EV Prime and Max, while it will also be an affordable alternative to the Hyundai Kona Electric.
