Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce its newly developed 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Ciaz in February 2019. Select Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa dealerships are already accepting bookings for the Ciaz 1.5D models for Rs 11,000. The bigger 1.5-litre engine won’t be on offer on the Ciaz Sigma for now, so the entry-level diesel Ciaz will be powered by the 1.3-litre engine only. The 1.5-litre diesel engine will eventually replace the current 1.3-litre diesel engine, but Maruti Suzuki has no plans to immediately discontinue the smaller engine on the Ciaz.
The new 1.5-litre diesel engine will be called the DDiS225, as it will produce 95.1PS of power at 4000rpm and 225Nm of peak torque between 1500-2500rpm. That’s a marginal increase of 5.1PS/25Nm over the existing 1.3-litre (90PS/200Nm) unit, which is called the DDiS200. The new diesel engine will return a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.82kmpl, which is 1.27kmpl less than the existing 1.3-litre diesel, but more than that of its rivals.

Sources aware of the development have informed CarDekho that the 1.5-litre diesel engine on the Ciaz will not get the mild-hybrid SHVS system. Both the current 1.5-litre petrol and the 1.3-litre diesel units on the Ciaz and the Ertiga are available with SHVS mild hybrid system. But while the 1.3-litre unit gets the older single-battery hybrid system, the 1.5-litre petrol engine is equipped with a dual-battery (one is Li-ion) hybrid system.
The new 1.5-litre diesel engine will be paired with a new 6-speed manual transmission. At present, all manual transmissions on Maruti cars are 5-speed units only. Even though the new 1.5-litre unit won’t be BSVI-compliant at launch, Maruti will upgrade it post April 2020 to comply with the latest emission norms. After Maruti debuts the new 1.5-litre engine with the Ciaz next month, expect to it make its way to the Ertiga and other cars later this year.
With the addition of 1.5-litre diesel engine to the lineup, the Ciaz will be available with three engine options: 1.5-litre petrol, 1.3-litre diesel and 1.5-litre diesel. The Ciaz 1.5-litre diesel is likely to be priced upwards of Rs 10 lakh. Prices of the Ciaz 1.3D, on the other hand, start from Rs 9.19 lakh and go up to Rs 11.02 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
