Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger car maker has commented that it would soon begin using high strength steel in majority of its variants by the year 2012. This move of the company will definitely reduce the carbon emission as the weight of the vehicles will be decreased. Company's DGM (Supply Chain) SK Gupta stated that they plan to use high strength steel in majority of car models by 2012. Mr. Gupta further added that high strength steel with less thickness will result in less fuel consumption of a vehicle and will ultimately reduce carbon dioxide emission. Gradually, Maruti has begun using high strength steel instead of normal steel in model 'A Star' which has lessened the carbon emission to 109 mg per km from 150 mg per km, said Mr. Gupta. He also commented that the high strength steel is used in floor and chassis of the vehicle which also reduces weight of the car by 120 kg.
It is to be mentioned here that 6 lakh million tonnes of steel is consumed by Maruti per annum. 50 per cent of it is being imported from Japan and Korea. Mr. Gupta also stated that out of the imported 50 per cent of steel, 15-20 per cent accounts for high strength steel. He, however, added that the use of high strength steel would result in increase of around 15-20 per cent in the input cost.
