Maruti Dominates May 2025 Car Sales; Mahindra Retains Its Second Spot, While Tata Slips Down The Order

Toyota, Mahindra and MG were the only carmakers to record growth in both month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) sales
The car sales data for May 2025 is out and Maruti continues to be the best-selling carmaker in India with over 1.3 lakh units sold. Meanwhile, Hyundai climbed up the roster by replacing Tata Motors in third place and Mahindra continues to retain the second spot. Starting with the chart-topper Maruti, it sold over 1.3 lakh units in May 2025, recording a 2 percent drop in sales compared to April 2025. Meanwhile, its May sales were also 5.6 percent lower than in May 2024.

Mahindra sold over 50,000 units in May 2025, witnessing a marginal increase in its monthly sales. Comparably, its year-on-year (YoY) sales witnessed a healthy growth of 21.3 percent. The SUV maker continues to retain its second position with a dominant performance.

Hyundai overtook Tata by selling over 43,000 units in May 2025. The Korean carmaker reported a month-on-month (MoM) and YoY sales drop of 1.2 percent and 10.8 percent, respectively.

Compared to Hyundai, Tata Motors witnessed a sharper decline in sales in May 2025, selling 513 units fewer than in April 2025. Its MoM and YoY declines were 8.1 percent and 11 percent, respectively. With that, the homegrown carmaker has slipped down to fourth place.

Toyota is the only carmaker to report steady MoM and YoY growth in May 2025. Its monthly gain was the highest on this list at 17.9 percent, while yearly gains reached 22.2 percent. The carmaker managed to sell over 29,000 units in May.

Kia India recorded a 5.5 percent slump in May sales compared to April 2025. In contrast, its yearly sales showed growth, registering a 14.4 percent increase.

Skoda India recorded a MoM drop of 7.7 percent in May 2025. Interestingly, it sold over 6,700 units this month which is over 3,800 more than in May 2024, leading to a strong YoY growth of 133.7 percent for the Czech carmaker.

MG Motor India also had a good month in May 2025. The carmaker registered MoM and YoY growth of 8.1 percent and 32.2 percent, respectively.

Honda saw some improvement in May 2025, with a 17.6 percent increase in MoM demand. However, its yearly sales remained underwhelming, with a dip of over 18 percent compared to May 2024.

Volkswagen managed to sell just over 2,800 units in May 2025. While its MoM decline was marginal, its yearly sales dropped by 13 percent compared to May 2024.
