With the upcoming MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) Maruti Ertiga, the No. 1 car maker of the country Maruti Suzuki India is planning to take on the likes of the current segment ruler Toyota Innova. Maruti Suzuki at present lacks appealing products in the utility segment which includes the Gypsy and the Grand Vitara and therefore has trifling presence in the segment. Post the Ertiga’s launch on 12th April, the company is expecting to sell around 4,000-5,000 units of Ertiga in the very first month. This new car is being manufactured at the company’s facility in Gurgaon and MSI has invested around Rs. 430 crore in the Ertiga’s development. The test-drive models of Maruti Ertiga MPV have reached the dealerships across the country and the bookings have also been opened.

According the Chief General Manager – Sales and Marketing, Maruti Suzuki India, Mr. Shashank Srivastava, the portfolio of MSI will be complete once the new MPV Ertiga reaches the market. Maruti Ertiga is a compact MUV that is designed to meet the buyers’ expectation in all aspects; this car can be utilized for both personal and commercial purposes, he added. Mr. Srivastava also mentioned that the utility segment has recorded a combined growth of 25 percent over the last three years and holds 14 percent share in the auto sector of the country; the company wishes to carve out a compact utility segment. As per the data provided by SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), 65% of the total 326,824 utility vehicles sold during April-February 2011-12 account to the MUV’s like Mahindra Xylo and Toyota Innova.

Currently the best-selling MUV in the country is the Toyota Innova with monthly sales figures of 5,000 units. Toyota Innova is equipped with a 2.5-liter diesel engine and is priced between Rs. 8.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and Rs. 13.58 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Maruti Ertiga’s prices are expected to start from Rs. 6.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the confirmed price of the top end diesel model is Rs. 9.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). With the brand name of Maruti Suzuki, the compelling price range, simple and sophisticated exteriors and interiors and a line-up of six variants (three each of petrol and diesel), Maruti Ertiga is sure to transcend the sales and popularity of Toyota Innova.
