Which of these two petrol-AMT pseudo-SUV offerings perform better in the real world?
Maruti recently launched the S-Presso and its biggest rival in the segment is the Renault Kwid. To keep things fresh, Renault also gave the Kwid a facelift. How do these two entry-level hatchbacks posing as SUVs perform in the real world? We find out.
Before we dive into the results we found out during our testing procedure, let us take a look at the engine specs of the two cars we tested.

Taking a look at the engine specs of the S-Presso and Kwid, it becomes clear that both these cars are at a level playing when it comes to numbers. But how well do these numbers translate into everyday driveability?
Performance Comparison
Acceleration and Roll-on Tests:
0-100kmph |
20-80kmph (Kickdown) |
|
Maruti S-Presso |
15.10 seconds |
9.55 seconds |
Renault Kwid |
19.05 seconds |
10.29 seconds |
In a sprint from 0 to 100kmph, the S-Presso has the Kwid beat hands down. It manages to reach the triple digit mark almost 4 seconds quicker. When talking about roll-on acceleration, that gap narrows down quite a bit. Their difference in their acceleration times from 20-80kmph is less than a second, and as such won’t be felt in everyday driving.

Maruti S-Presso |

Renault Kwid |
42.75m |

The Kwid is much quicker in coming to a stop, being it from 100kmph or 80kmph. The difference in coming to a stop from a 100kmph is enough to suggest that the Kwid’s brakes are better than the S-Presso’s. However coming to a stop from 80kmph, the difference between the two can be considered negligible.

Renault claims slightly higher fuel efficiency for the Kwid, compared to what Maruti claims for the S-Presso. However, in the real world, the S-Presso is more fuel efficient than the Renault Kwid. Out on the highway the difference between the two is negligible, but in the city, there is a difference of almost 3kmpl.
Take a look at the table below to figure out the fuel efficiency you can expect from either of the two, depending upon your usage.

Verdict
In terms of straight line speed, the S-Presso has the Kwid beat. However, when it comes to stopping from those speeds, the Kwid is better. In the fuel efficiency comparison, the Kwid comes second once again.
Overall, we recommend you buy the S-Presso if your daily usage has more of city driving where you have to squeeze in and out of gaps quickly. However, if you drive on the highway more, we recommend the Kwid as its fuel efficiency is almost on par with that of the S-Presso and it comes to a stop much faster than the Maruti hatchback.
