Maruti Suzuki India sales slide 7.1 % in December 2011

Maruti Suzuki India car sales continue to slide for the seventh consecutive month in December to sell 92,161 passenger and commercial vehicles including the exports of 14,686 units in the month of December.  The car sales have seen a 7.1 % decline from the same time in 2010 where the car manufacturer had managed to sell 99, 225 units. The Maruti Suzuki India had undergone a harrowing experience in 2011 after recurrent strikes starting from June 2011. After the second labour unrest in August and the third to follow closely on the heels in October, the auto giant had to conclude with 7,73,361 units of overall car sales including the exports in the period of April-December in the FY2011-2012 from 9,27,665 units in the corresponding period last fiscal 2010-2011 sliding by 16.6% in the process.

Almost every car manufacturer had suffered drastically with the depreciating rupee value combined with the petrol price hikes and climbing lending rates to top the both. While Maruti Suzuki India could be just one among them, the auto giant had to face its own set of private problems. However, the company which had to close down its factories for maintenance for six days from December 26th to 31st had to settle down for 69,329 units of passenger car sales in the month of December against the 75,652 unit sales from December 2010 to witness a negative growth of 8.4% while the cumulative passenger car sales in the first eight months of the FY2011-2012 suffered even more by 17.6% dip in passenger car sales at 5,74,447. Despite a negative growth in the month of December, the certain segment for the car manufacturer has offered a long sigh of relief for the auto major.

The mid-sized sedan segment is the prize winner for the month where the Maruti SX4 sedan outsold 761 units from 2010 December at 843 units in December, 2011 beating its own targets to witness a 10.8% growth.  The compact sedan Maruti Swift Dzire stands next observing a growth of 6.8% with 9,189 units in December, 2011 as compared to 8,601 units sale in similar time last year. The B+ segment  hatchbacks Maruti Zen Eztillo, Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz have also managed to sell decently despite the dire conditions and over prolonged delivery time with 20,653 unit sales against 20,557 units recording 0.5% growth. Unfortunately it is the most in  demand Maruti India’s A segment cars that heave seen a downturn in sales selling just 38,593 units for Maruti 800, Maruti Alto, Maruti A-star and Maruti WagonR put together with 15.6% drop in sales in this segment. Maruti Suzuki India managed to sell 51 units of its premium sedan in December alone with 387 units of Kizashi sales until December in the FY2011-2012.
