Maruti Suzuki India’s exports cross 8 lakh-milestone

Within a duration of twenty three years after the company made its first shipment of 500 cars overseas, the exports of Maruti Suzuki India have crossed the milestone of 8 lakh units, along with the overseas sales of 25 per cent from Maruti A Star, company’s flagship model. As per the officials of the company, since 1987-88, when Maruti Suzuki India started selling cars in other markets, the company has exported a total of 8 lakh units. The officials said that out of the total, 2 lakh units are of in less than 20 months of beginning the overseas shipment of the model. The exports business of the company started with a humble shipment of merely 500 units to Hungary.

Later on, the company started expanding its business to other countries. In this list of countries, Netherlands is on the top with 84,727 units out of total exports. On the other hand, Italy and Algeria have imported 54,273 units and 75,060 units respectively. UK and Chile are on 4th and 5th position in this list of top buying nations. They account for 50,916 and 49,299 units. Though MSI (Maruti Suzuki India) has been successful in exporting almost all of its models but Maruti Alto, Maruti 800, Maruti Zen and A-Star had comparatively more demand overseas.

Maruti Alto is the best-selling export car of Maruti Suzuki India. Its 2.08 lakh units have been shipped abroad. M800’s 2.02 lakh units have been sold. The company has sold 1,27,500 units of its compact A-Star model in the year 2009-10. In February 2009, the A-Star model of the company was launched in European markets. Presently, the model is exported to around 100 countries. MSI has also shipped around 76,000 vehicles till now in the present fiscal year. Out of these, around 54,000 units are A-Star.
