Maruti Suzuki has launched a mild hybrid version of its Ciaz mid-size sedan at a starting price of INR 8.23 Lac. Christened as SHVS that stands for Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki, Ciaz now promises to be the most fuel efficiency vehicle in the country with a staggering certified fuel-efficienct of 28.09 kmpl in its newest hybrid avatar.
The new Ciaz SHVS is not a proper hybrid like the much more expensive Toyota Prius and Camry, in fact, it features some basic tech that we have already seen in Mahindra Scorpio with the name of Micro Hybrid technology. Basically, Maruti Suzuki has installed a start-stop mechanism in the Ciaz that helps cut down on fuel consumption by switching off the engine during idling and switches it on when the clutch is depressed.

Alongside start-stop, the sedan also gets a technology called the Deceleration Energy Regenerating function. With help of this tech, the energy wasted during a car’s deceleration is fed back into its electrical system, which results into improved overall mechanical efficiency of the engine. However, this only comes to play if the car is decelerating but is already over 30kmph.
Powering the Ciaz SHVS is the same Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre MJD unit dubbed as DDiS 200 and continues to deliver 89 bhp of max power at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 200 Nm at 1750rpm.
