The resurgent sales of the S-Cross facelift prove that looks do matter
When Maruti Suzuki launched the S-Cross in 2015, we found its design to be a bit bland, especially compared to other offerings in the compact and sub-compact SUV segments. And although it was launched with a competitive price tag for a car in its segment, it was surprising to see not many buyers line up outside the Nexa showrooms, like how they do for other cars from Maruti.
In a bid to increase its appeal the homegrown carmaker overhauled the S-Cross’ easygoing design with a more aggressive one and added a host of features and technology too. In the process, it lost the rather brilliant 1.6-litre diesel engine. Although many enthusiasts across the country cried foul, this move has done wonders for the S-Cross’ sales figures.
Truth be told, the lack of a powerful engine didn’t hurt us as much as the plain styling did. The updated S-Cross’ improved fuel efficiency (thanks to Suzuki’s SHVS mild-hybrid tech) and the added features sealed the deal for those who shied away from the premium crossover the first time around. At least, that’s what the sales numbers tell us.

The average monthly sales (Apr-Sep 2017) of the pre-facelift model was 1414 units whereas that of the facelift (Oct 2017 to Mar 2018) is 3740 units. Clearly, sales of the S-Cross facelift has surpassed that of its predecessor by a good margin. But when compared to its competition - Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta - the S-Cross only manages to pip the French SUV, which averages 1006 units a month in the same period. However, the Creta continues to lead the pack with average monthly sales of 8851 units, more than twice that of the S-Cross.
The S-Cross facelift is powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine with Suzuki’s mild-hybrid SHVS tech. This motor puts out 90PS of power and 200Nm of peak torque. It delivers a claimed mileage of 25.1kmpl, which is an increase of 1.45kmpl over its predecessor. For reference, the 1.6-litre diesel engine on the pre-facelift S-Cross developed 120PS of maximum power and 320Nm of peak torque.
