Maruti Suzuki to invest $1.3 billion on new plant in Gujarat

R.C Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti India has informed that the country’s leading car manufacturer has decided to invest a sum of $1.3 billion in setting up a new manufacturing facility in Gujarat. Gujarat is slowly becoming an auto manufacturers’ hub in India, with many car makers such as Ford India, Peugeot Citroen showing increased interest towards setting up their production facilities in the most business friendly state. While the company is mainly concentrating on setting up a plant in Western parts of Gujarat, the decision will be made only towards the end of October. Osamu Suzuki, the chairman of Suzuki Motor had recently visited Gujarat to meet the Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi towards deciding the potential location for the new plant.

With the recent labour unrest at the Manesar facility in Haryana, the production of the company’s best-selling model Maruti Swift among the other Maruti cars has been hit. However, with MSI’s focus mainly on ramping up the production of the Swift model, the production of other models such Maruti A-Star has come to a halt. Maruti A-Star is exported to various overseas markets – European, African, South American and other Asian markets as well. Maruti India in a 2-year agreement with Nissan is expected to export around 35,000 Maruti A-star hatchbacks to the European markets.

Suzuki Motor Corp., which holds 54.2 % stakes in Maruti India, is currently the leading car manufacturer in the country, with Hyundai India in the second position. Hyundai Motors is launching its cheapest car so far, Hyundai EON to target the sales of Maruti Alto. Maruti Alto has been the MSI’s flagship model, which had been re-launched in the K10 version last year with a 1.0 L K10 engine at a price of Rs 3.03 lakh. The K10 version promises an ARAI certified fuel economy of 20.2 kmpl. Post that, the company had also launched a CNG version of Maruti Alto at Rs 3.23 lakh, which promises to be a better performer in terms of power output and fuel economy.
