While we wait for an all-new Swift, looks like the current one has one last trick up its sleeve! If reports are to be believed, Maruti will launch the popular hatchback with an automated manual transmission (AMT) later this year.
Its sedan sibling, the DZire already gets the optional automatic paired with the 1.3-litre diesel engine that generates 75PS of power and 190Nm of torque. Since both cars share the engine and the platform, it is safe to assume that the new transmission will be a simple cut-paste job from the compact sedan to the hatch. The top-spec AMT variant of the sedan costs half a lakh more than its manual counterpart. We expect the Swift AGS to command a similar premium over the manual and cost approximately Rs 8.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) for the ZDi trim.
The automaker recently revealed that the AMT tech will be floated across its portfolio. We think it's the Vitara Brezza that is next in line to receive the AGS treatment. The technology is supplied to Maruti by Magnetti Marelli (a subsidiary of Fiat). The automaker tested waters with the Celerio hatchback, that debuted the 'Auto Gear Shift' (AGS) moniker. Over the years, more than sixty percent of its sales are courtesy the two-pedal variant. Reports say that Maruti Suzuki sold over 54,700 units of AMT equipped cars in 2015-16.
The Swift has been a darling of the masses and topped its segment in the month of April as well, clocking a cool fifteen thousand units in sales. We think the AMT will simply add to its appeal. Always wanted an automatic Swift? Or will you prefer the slick shifting 5-speed manual? Let us know through the comments!
