Everything including the design, features, and powertrain of this hatchback changed over the last 2 decades, but the sense of sportiness remains intact
It has been 19 years since the Maruti Swift entered the Indian market as an affordable hatchback, and since its launch, it has gone through four generations, the latest of which was launched this year. We all have grown up around this car and it has taken that time to evolve and become better. We recently compared the current fourth generation Swift to its first generation avatar, and here is how much has changed.
The design has gone from sharp to curvy. There are a lot of modern elements like the LED DRLs and dual-tone alloy wheels, but the sportiness of this car can still be seen in its design as the silhouette is still identical to the first-gen model. Inside, while the cabin still remains dark, the materials have become better, and it now looks more premium from the inside.
A lot of things have changed, including the powertrain. The older generation used to come with a diesel engine, which Maruti discontinued, and till the 3rd generation, the Swift also had the option of a CNG powertrain, which is not offered with the 4th-gen model. And now, the older 4-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine has been replaced by a 3-cylinder unit, which does offer a better city drive along with a better fuel efficiency, but at the same time, it is underpowered, and feels less refined than the older engine.

The current Maruti Swift has evolved a lot and has gone from a sporty hatchback to a family car. Much has changed for the better, few things remain the same, and some things still need improvements, which we might get to see in the next few generations.
It is priced from Rs 6.49 lakh to Rs 9.59 lakh (ex-showroom), and rivals the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
