The planned onslaught of five new models, we suspect, will be a mix of a couple of hatchbacks and SUVs, and a midsize MPV as well

Upcoming Maruti cars

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, is also among the few other marques who will be entering the EV space by 2025. However, that hasn’t deterred the brand from committing to bringing out new internal combustion engine (ICE) models up until the next decade or so. In a recent interview, Maruti Suzuki’s chairman, R.C. Bhargava, said that the carmaker has plans of introducing five models by 2031. We take a guess at what certainly could be the upcoming five new Maruti models:

Grand Vitara-based 3-row SUV

Maruti Grand Vitara

In September 2022, Maruti brought back the Grand Vitara nameplate as its new SUV offering in the compact SUV segment but there’s still no presence of the marque in the popular 3-row midsize SUV space. So we think Maruti could introduce a 3-row version of the Grand Vitara as a rival to the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar and Mahindra XUV700, letting potential Maruti Suzuki customers pick a 3-row SUV as an affordable option to the Invicto, a premium and luxury 3-row MPV.

Two Hatchbacks Planned As Well

Maruti Alto K10
Maruti Celerio

One body type where Maruti has had a good command is hatchbacks. The carmaker has the most number of hatchbacks on offer in our market, even with their sales dwindling due to the SUV fervour taking over new buyers. Maruti could launch the two new hatchbacks in the sub-Rs 10 lakh space, as potential replacements for the Celerio and Alto, although both bearing a fresh name.

A New MPV Between The XL6 And Invicto

Maruti XL6
Maruti Invicto

Maruti currently has three MPVs in its portfolio – the Ertiga, XL6 and Invicto – of which the latter two are sold via the Nexa outlets. That said, there’s a significant price gap between the XL6 and Invicto, and so Maruti could be looking to fill it in with a new MPV, which will also serve as a rival to the Kia Carens, which is very popular in the Indian market. The carmaker could hope to make a dent in the Carens’s sales with the introduction of this new model.

Maruti’s New Micro SUV

Another segment that’s been creating a stir in the market is that of the micro SUVs. It all began when the Tata Punch went on sale back in 2021, and was recently expanded with the addition of the Hyundai Exter. While the Maruti Ignis is a part-time rival to these two currently, it’s still essentially a hatchback with slightly rugged styling. We thus feel Maruti will bring out its own micro SUV to put up a more fierce fight in this growing segment.

Which of these five cars would you like to see in showrooms first and what other segments do you think Maruti should target? Let us know in the comments.
