Maruti to repair engine leakage in 6,000 Altos

Maruti Suzuki India, country's largest car maker, stated on Wednesday that it is in the process of fixing an oil leakage in the engines of more than 6,000 Altos manufactured in the month of April this year. The move has been taken in the wake of a number of complains related to the oil leakage in its engines.

It is to be mentioned here that just a year back the company had recalled as many as 1 lakh units of its compact hatchback Maruti A-Star due to the problem with the fuel pumps. At that time, the Maruti A-Star was recalled from the major export markets of Maruti Suzuki India including Europe, Australia and North Africa.

The Indian auto giant has asked its nearly 2,740 service and 800 sales centers to check as well as repair the faulty Alto models. Playing down the whole issue Maruti India's spokes man said that this is not a recall and the vehicle, if affected may show some starting problems and the same can be easily repaired at the company's workshop. During the first quarter of financial year 2010-11, Maruti Suzuki India sold more than 64,500 Alto's in total, however, any exact figure related to number of affected cars is yet to be ascertained by the company.

The Maruti alto model is also exported to the countries like Sri Lanka and Nepal from India. According to some media reports, the fault in the Alto has been erupted in Maruti Alto model after the company tweaked Alto's F-series engines in April this year, in a bid to make them compatible to the new BS-IV emission norms. It is also claimed by some news reports that making changes in to the core structure of the engine could have been the source of this problem.

The Maruti Alto is the best selling car in the Indian market and accounts for more than 25 percent on the annual sales of the company. In financial year 2009-10, the company sold 2.35 lakh units of Altos.
