The latest rumor floating in the Indian car market will surely take you by surprise. It is being said that Fiat will apparently now develop diesel engines for none other than Maruti India for its cars like Maruti Swift, Maruti Dzire, Maruti Ritz and Maruti SX4. These engines will be manufactured at its own plant located in Ranjangaon.

If reports are to be believed, since 2007, Maruti India is already done with the licensing pact to develop Fiat’s 1.3 litre of multi jet diesel engines at its Manesar plant. This diesel engine was initially used in Maruti Swift and then was used in models like Maruti SX4, Maruti Ritz, and Maruti Dzire. Rumor has it that the diesel engine was directly sourced by Maruti’s parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation from Fiat Italy.

Reportedly, both Maruti and Fiat are on the final stages of signing the supply agreement for the Fiat’s diesel engine. However, it is possible that some kind of technical changes will be done as few parts of the Fiat’s multi jet diesel engine are different, which will be changed before these engines are used in Maruti cars models. The latest diesel car by Maruti India is its brand new Maruti Swift, which was launched on 17th of August 2011.

I love my SX4 AWD here in the States, but hardly ever see another one. It's 2 litre non-VVT engine has really good power on Kentucky's hilly interstate highways, but is computer limited off the line to merely peppy, with no wheelspin even in the rain and just a little quicker than the average Ford Taurus. At higher speeds the mileage, never outstanding, drops closer to larger cars probably due to it's relative height. I think a diesel would be great here, since they have to artificially limit the takeoff to warranty the driveline anyway, and the mileage would then match anything sold here.
