Maruti Wagon R can run on diesel engine now

Speculations are rife that the country’s leading car manufacturer is mulling to introduce the diesel variant of the compact hatchback, Maruti Wagon R in tandem with the increasing demand for the diesel cars in the country. Maruti Wagon R diesel is most likely to come affixed with a three-cylinder 1.0L 970 cc diesel engine to churn out a peak power of 58 PS and a top torque of 150 Nm. In truth, this diesel engine is Maruti Swift’s or Maruti Ritz’s 4-cylinder 1.3 L diesel engine, toned down with knocking off one cylinder to fall in lines with the economic price tag of Maruti Wagon R.

Moreover, the diesel engine will boost the fuel economy as well, which is expected to be around 25 kmpl to be able to compete against the ace players in the segment like Tata Indica. As with the expensive diesel technology, the Maruti Wagon R price is expected to shoot up by Rs 80,000 or higher. Currently, the Maruti Wagon R price stands at Rs 4.20 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for top-end petrol variant. The high petrol rates are driving the consumers to opt for diesel driven cars over the petrol cars. But, the lack of diesel variants in the low-priced small cars like, Maruti Alto, recently launched Hyundai EON or Chevrolet Spark are instigating the consumers for second thoughts about purchasing the petrol engine cars.

Despite the low cost of the cars, the high running cost due to the sky-rocketing petrol price each day is restricting the masses to purchase petrol driven car straight away. Noticing the high demand for the diesel cars, Chevrolet India and Toyota India have launched the diesel variants of their cheapest hatchbacks- Chevrolet Beat and Toyota Etios Liva. Maruti Swift is the best-selling hatchback in the B segment cars but, not many can afford the Maruti Swift diesel as the diesel base variant price begins at Rs 5,48,384. However, Maruti Wagon R Diesel will be a perfect cocktail of diesel engine and affordable price. Maruti Wagon R diesel variant might be placed around Rs 4 lakh and will be well within the reach of a common man in India.
