The Maruti WagonR’s claimed fuel efficiency figure is 21.5 kmpl. How much does it deliver in the real world?
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is the most popular car in its segment with monthly demand of around 15,000 to 16,000 units per month. It is available with a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine, introduced with the recently launched model. Both the engines are available with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard with a 5-speed AMT option as well. We recently put the Maruti WagonR 1.2 MT through its paces to clear the air about its fuel efficiency. But before we get down to the real-world numbers, take a look at the hatchback’s specifications.

If you are planning on buying the hatchback, you can read our Maruti WagonR first drive review here. Coming to the numbers itself, they do seem quite impressive but fall slightly short of the manufacturers claim. But that’s acceptable since the manufacturer’s mileage figures are recorded under a controlled environment.
If you drive mostly in the city, then expect WagonR 1.2 MT to return somewhere around 16kmpl but this figure is prone to drop down if you come across dense, bottleneck traffic. On the contrary, if your daily routine majorly comprises of a clean route where you can cruise, then expect the overall fuel efficiency figure to go up by around 2 to 2 and a half kmpl.
Our road test teams drive cars with a gentle foot while testing them for fuel efficiency so it’s expected that your figures might deviate from our tested figures since fuel efficiency figures also depend on the driving style, car and road conditions. If you are one of the owners of the new WagonR with the bigger 1.2-litre petrol engine, share your findings with us and other owners in the comments section below.
