Mass-market Sedan Sales In FY2025 Records Steep Decline, With Only Maruti Dzire And Volkswagen Virtus Having Marginal Gains
Models like Tata Tigor, Hyundai Verna and Honda City records the maximum decline in sales amidst an overall slump in the segment
Sedans are no longer the preferred choice for Indian buyers, and the declining sales of mass-market sedans in FY2025 clearly reflect this shift in preference. While there has been marginal growth for two models, most of the other cars have witnessed record declines in their year-on-year (YoY) sales, as low as 48 percent.

Key Takeaways
-
The Maruti Dzire, owing to its popularity, has had a negligible growth in sales compared to FY2024. It is the only sedan in this list to have over 1 lakh units sold. On the other hand, the Maruti Ciaz which has been discontinued recently is nearing its dead end.
-
The Hyundai Aura had maintained ground with a sales decline by just 270 units compared to last fiscal year. It has sold over 50,000 units which also includes a little contribution from its sister model the Hyundai Xcent.
-
The Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor, unlike their segment rivals Dzire and Aura have had underwhelming sales in FY25. While the Amaze reported a modest drop by 9 percent, the Tata Tigor, involving the contribution from its EV counterpart, have jointly had a drop of about 40 percent.
-
The Volkswagen Virtus is the only compact sedan to witness a yearly growth of 2 percent. Interestingly, it is also the bestselling model in the carmaker’s portfolio.
-
Compact mass-market sedans like the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, and Skoda Slavia have seen the sharpest decline in sales, up to about 50 percent. Surprisingly, two of the longest-running nameplates in the segment, the Verna and City have become the least preferred options among buyers.
