The ongoing week-long strike in Maruti India’s Manesar factory is now attracting more attention. On Friday, Haryana state government intervened by imposing ban on workers' strike and passed prohibitory orders. Experts now suggest that Haryana government’s step to seek legal solution and impose ban might backfire and create more labor unrest in India's biggest auto hub.
According to the inputs, even after government’s pressure and stationing of extra police force at the factory, workers were adamant on continuing the strike till their demand is met.General Secretary of the newly-formed Maruti Suzuki Employees Union, Shiv Kumar said that they are going to continue the strike even after pressure mounted on them by Maruti Suzuki management. Further he added that workers have legal right to form independent union and they won’t deter by any means.
With heat of Maruti labor strike spreading to neighborhood, labor unions of adjoining units like India’s biggest motorcycle manufacturer Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) and car accessory suppliers like Rico Auto, Satyam Auto and Omaxe Auto have already sent memorandums to their respective management to intervene in Maruti matter.
Senior Haryana government official on Friday said that government may opt for forceful removal of workers, who are currently present inside the factory.Haryana Industry minister Randeep Sujrewala said that government is taking precautionary measures on the strike and will not allow the dispute to go out of hands. Further he commented that government is trying to resolve the issue between the two parties with proper judicious solutions.
As per sources, Maruti India is on the back foot, as the company has experienced a loss of Rs. 350 crore due to disrupted production in Manesar plant and surpassing the delivery time of diesel cars to customers. It is worth mentioning that approximately 2,000 workers are on strike since Saturday, due to which Maruti suffered a loss of 5,400 Maruti cars till Thursday.
