Mercedes to enter the small car segment

The small car segment in India holds 70 per cent of the total market share and is growing leaps and bounds. This segment has attracted various auto players to invest in this segment and now the news is out that Mercedes-Benz the markets leader in the luxury car segment is keen on bringing a new small car for the domestic auto market. It was announced by a senior official executive from the company.
As per the senior official, the German auto marvel has not yet finalized when it will come with the hatchback but is in the making of a concrete plan.
Uwe Jarosch, Chief Financial Officer and Management Board Member, Mercedes Benz India said that the company could develop its own small car for the domestic auto market for future expansion in its portfolio. Mr. Jarosch further added that the car making needs huge investments and due to this it is backed by volumes.
He made a point while saying that if the auto company is investing 1 billion euro on the making of a small car, in return the company is looking for huge returns.
As per the information, the R&D center in Bangalore that aids the HQ in Germany is working on the small car project.
He said that Mercedes-Benz is also planning to double its human resource by next year in its Bangalore's R&D centre which is currently 600.
The luxury car maker is all set to expand in its business as it will soon set up brand centres including the investment from its current array of dealers. It will feature almost 20 varied car models. As per the company's plan, the first centre is expected to establish in Delhi by March 2011 to be later followed by Bangalore then Chennai and Mumbai.
