Just one more day, and India will have the much anticipated Mercedes-Benz A-Class premium hatchback, which will open up an entirely new segment in the country. However, the MINI is already there in the premium hatchback space, they are more of a life-style vehicles. BMW 1-Series and Volvo V40 Cross Country will soon join the competition against the A-Class.
The A-Class will be amongst one of the most affordable Mercedes Cars ever sold in India. The B-Class is the other affordable vehicle, Mercedes-Benz sells in India, but that too is a niche product rolled out for touring lovers. Initially, the A-Class will be brought via the completely built unit (CBU) route, making it priced a little over than it could have been, if assembled locally. However, Mercedes-Benz has already said that they would begin assembling the A-Class and the B-Class models at its Chakan Plant, near Pune, so to make them more affordable.
The A-Class will be offered with two engine options- 1.6-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine, both mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox as standard. The B-Class that is available in petrol only option, too is likely to get the 2.2-litre diesel engine powered version in India soon. Mercedes-Benz with A-Class hatch and B-Class diesel aiming to strengthen its position in the Indian auto industry.
