Mercedes-Benz is all set to launch its GLE SUV tomorrow. The GLE-Class will be a replacement for the M-Class, even though it is an update for the M-Class. This move might be an approach towards bring in some uniformity, by naming Merc’s SUV segment cars with initial ‘G’. The new GLE will rival BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the newly launched Land Rover Discovery Sport.
Under the hood, the car will be offered in two diesel options. GLE-Class is expected to follow the M-Class trail here, which currently offers two engines, a 2.2-litre in-line 4 cylinder and a 3.0-litre V6. The powerplants in the GLE feature the same displacement but have been refined, to be more fuel-efficient. This was managed by making minor tweaks to turbocharger, a new ECU and an automatic Start/Stop function. The powerplants come mated to an all new 9-speed automatic that is expected to be more advanced and better than the current 7-speed unit.
The aesthetic updates include a protruding snout flanked by the flowing headlamps with eyebrow like DRLs. The sides are still reminiscent of the current M-Class and so is the rear. The interiors get a new infotainment screen and more rounded off AC vents and dash setup. The car will also flaunt an all-new steering wheel.
