Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the petrol avatar of its flagship SUV -- called the GLS400 4MATIC -- at Rs 82.90 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). Notably, the SUV is the eighth product to be launched by the German auto major this year. Most of the launches have been petrol avatars of existing cars, including the recently launched GLE400. With the launch of the petrol-powered GLS, Mercedes-Benz now offers the option of a petrol engine across its range of sedans and SUVs.
The GLS400 is a CBU (completely built unit) and will be assembled locally by the end of the year. It looks no different from its diesel counterpart and retains the muscular styling and the humongous proportions. Available in just two shades - Polar White and Obsidian Black - the GLS oozes class, incorporating trademark Mercedes elements such as LED headlamps and taillamps and the large twin-slat grille. The interiors remain unchanged too and carry forward the same seven-seater layout with a plethora of gadgetry to play around with. Highlights include leather upholstery for all three rows, electric seats with memory for the driver as well as co-driver and a panoramic sunroof. It also gets a large eight-inch screen for the infotainment system that is paired with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
The biggest change, of course, is the petrol motor. The 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 motor produces 333PS of power and 480Nm of torque. The engine is paired to Mercedes' new 9-speed automatic transmission and lets you choose different drive modes via the 'Dynamic Select' as well. Driving modes include 'Comfort', 'Sport', 'Individual', 'Slippery' and 'Off-road'. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive and AIRMATIC air suspension tech are standard on the GLS400. It is also among the safest vehicles around, featuring eight airbags and three-point seatbelts on all rows.
Often touted as the 'S-Class Of SUVs', the GLS is a vital product in Mercedes-Benz' India line-up. In fact, the German automaker also stated that India has emerged as one among the top ten markets for the SUV globally. Offering a petrol variant only strengthens the brand's portfolio in the country, we think. With the demand slowly shifting towards petrol, it is a well-timed move too!
