The facelifted S-Class will be the first car to use the new engines
Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off of four new engines it plans to introduce in 2017. The new engine family includes a range of petrol and diesel mills in 4, 6 and 8-cylinder configurations. While the details include a lot of technological and engineering wizardry, we’re going to keep it simple.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The engine family is modular in nature and has a standard cylinder spacing of 90mm and a volume of 500cc per cylinder. This makes the family more flexible for scale production.
- Mercedes-Benz is investing a total of around 3 billion euros in the new engine series.
- The new family of engines was launched in 2016 with the 4-cylinder diesel engine codenamed ‘OM 654’. This motor debuted with the new E-Class.
- The same engine family is now being extended with the introduction of four new engines i.e. an inline 6-cylinder petrol (M 256), an inline 4-cylinder petrol (M 264), an inline 6-cylinder diesel (OM 656) and a petrol V8 (M 176).
- In 2017, the facelifted S-Class will be the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to be powered by the new engines.
Until Mercedes-Benz reveals the complete specifications, here’s a look at what each engine has to offer:
Inline 6-cylinder petrol
The 3.0-litre engine integrates a 48V electric system and includes technologies like an integrated starter alternator to eliminate turbo-lag and improve fuel economy. The engine can deliver up to 408PS of power and 500Nm of torque, with a claimed 15 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, compared to the motor it replaces.
Inline 4-cylinder petrol
This 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder unit produces around 136PS of power and employs twin-scroll turbochargers and a belt-driven 48V starter-alternator (BSA), which helps in fuel-saving hybrid functions.
Inline 6-cylinder diesel
Labelled as the “most powerful passenger-car diesel engine in the history of Mercedes-Benz”, this 3.0-litre unit produces 313PS of power which is around 55PS more than the current V6 engine. The company claims this engine offers a 7 per cent boost in fuel efficiency as well.
V8 petrol
The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine produces around 476PS of power and a peak torque of 700Nm. Mercedes claims that the new engine will consume 10 per cent less fuel than its predecessor which makes 455PS.
While the engines make their debut in the soon-to-be-updated S-Class next year, other models in the Mercedes-Benz range will follow soon.
