MG Motor Teases Its First SUV For India; Name Reveal Tomorrow

The MG SUV will be launched in India in June 2019

• It will be revealed completely in April 2019.
• To be powered by both petrol and diesel engines.
• Will be launched as a 5-seater, but will also get a 7-seat version later.
• Prices are expected to start from Rs 17 lakh

MG Motor has revealed that it would announce the name of its first SUV for India on 9 January 2019. The carmaker has also teased the SUV in an image that was posted on its Facebook page.

The teaser image reveals the left side of the SUV from the front to slightly ahead of the b-pillar. It doesn’t give out much details apart from reassuring us that it would be based on the Baojun 530, which also looks similar. The image reveals that the MG SUV will get a daytime running light where headlamps are conventionally situated. The headlamps will be placed lower in the front bumper, like on the Tata Harrier.

MG Motor has previously confirmed that its first SUV will be bigger than the Honda CR-V, but won’t be as expensive. The Honda CR-V, for instance, costs Rs 28.15 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the most affordable variant with the petrol engine. MG Motor, on the other hand, is expected to price its SUV under Rs 20 lakh.

The MG SUV will most likely be based on the same platform as the Baojun 530, which also looks similar to the teased SUV from outside. Car manufacturers like MG Motor, Baojun, Roewe and Wuling all fall under the SAIC Motor Corporation of China umbrella.

Other than being priced competitively, the upcoming MG SUV is expected to get many features that are available in more expensive vehicles. It will have in-built internet connectivity and the infotainment system in itself will be a large tab-like unit with functions like AC controls and navigation built in.

MG Motor has already confirmed that this SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre engine, which will be shared with the Jeep Compass. There will also be a petrol engine on offer, but MG Motor is yet to reveal any detail about it.
