Hyundai claims a mileage of 25kmpl on the i20 diesel. Can it deliver as much in the real-world?
The Hyundai i20 is one of the oldest premium hatchback nameplates still on sale in India. It is now into its third-gen avatar and is offered with a total of three engines (same as the Venue) including a 1.5-litre diesel (the only other hatchback in the segment to get a diesel engine along with the Tata Altroz). Hyundai offers this engine with only a 6-speed MT gearbox. We managed to run our fuel efficiency test with this 1.5-litre diesel-equipped i20 and here are our findings:
Engine |
1.5-litre Diesel |
Power |
100PS |
Torque |
240Nm |
Transmission |
6-speed Manual |
Claimed fuel efficiency |
25kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (city) |
18.51kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (highway) |
23.35kmpl |
As per our test, the new i20 with the 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual fell short by over 6kmpl compared to its claimed average ARAI figure when driven in the city. It, however, fared quite well when taken on the highway as the tested fuel efficiency figure stood at 23.35kmpl.

Based on the results from our efficiency test from city and highway driving conditions, we’ve estimated how the diesel-powered i20 would perform in mixed driving conditions:
Mileage |
City:Highway (50:50) |
City:Highway (25:75) |
City:Highway (75:25) |
20.65kmpl |
21.91kmpl |
19.52kmpl |
If you use the i20 diesel equally between the city and highway, expect it to deliver a mileage of around 20kmpl. For those who use their hatchback mostly on wider stretches of roads, the fuel efficiency should go up by around 1.3kmpl. In case your usage is majorly limited to the city, the new i20’s diesel engine is expected to return a mileage of around 19kmpl.

It is important to note that fuel efficiency depends on a combination of driving conditions, the car’s condition as well as your driving style, so your experience may vary from ours. If you own an i20 diesel, feel free to share your findings with us in the comments.
