Both claim an economy of over 25kmpl, but which one is more efficient in the real world - sedan or SUV? Time to find out
Honda and Maruti recently came out with their first strong-hybrid offerings, the City e:HEV and 2022 Grand Vitara, for our market. Both have a 1.5-litre strong-hybrid petrol powertrain (their respective combined outputs are 126PS and 116PS). The strong-hybrid powertrain in both cars comes paired with an e-CVT only. While Maruti claims a mileage of 27.97kmpl for the SUV, the City Hybrid’s fuel efficiency is rated at 26.5kmpl.
So if you are shortlisting the Grand Vitara strong-hybrid and City Hybrid, here’s a look at which of the two will be more frugal in the real world:

Based on the mileage figures achieved by both these strong-hybrid models during our tests, the SUV has an edge of over 5kmpl in city whereas it's the hybrid sedan that is more frugal on highway drives. Let’s see what fuel efficiency you can expect depending on your usage in mixed conditions:

The Grand Vitara turns out to be more frugal than Honda’s hybrid sedan, both in the city and on the highway. The difference of around 2kmpl in the fuel efficiencies of the two strong-hybrid cars in the city and highway is probably due to the difference in their output figures and wheel sizes. Over the course of a full tank of fuel, the average difference of 2kmpl could make the Grand Vitara cover almost 200 more kilometres than the City Hybrid. It helps that the SUV has a 45-litre fuel tank compared to the sedan’s 40 litre tank.
These figures can also vary based on your driving pattern and the car’s health. What kind of fuel efficiency have you been getting from your Maruti Grand Vitara or Honda City strong-hybrids? Let us know in the comments below.
