The compact hatchback segment has seen two most iconic competitors return in their next-gen avatars. First came the Hyundai Santro at the end of 2018 with a starting price of Rs 3.9 lakh and now the new Maruti Wagon R, at a starting price of Rs 4.19 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Delhi). Both have been updated with a host of features but which one, among these, will claim the crown for being the most value for money offering? Let’s dive into the details.

We begin by comparing the measurements and mechanicals of the two hatchbacks:
Dimensions
The new WagonR is based on the Heartect platform and is bigger than the outgoing model while still retaining its tall boy design. It is 45mm longer, 115mm taller and offers more than 100 litres of boot space compared to the Santro. However, the Santro is still 25mm wider by design.
Engine
Maruti is now offering the Wagon R with a choice of two petrol engines with the larger 1.2-litre unit now being an option for those seeking more performance in this segment. Both cars offer an automatic transmission (AMT) as well. In terms of claimed fuel efficiency (mileage), both engines of the Wagon R are rated higher than the Santro’s.
