New Maruti Wagon R raises a price war

The New Maruti Wagon R, which was launched on the 23rd of April, is all set to raise a price war in the highly competitive compact car segment, as Maruti Suzuki India has launched it with an aggressive pricing of Rs 3.28 lakh to Rs 3.81 lakh.

The New Wagon R will compete with popular cars of this segment including the Hyundai i10 (Rs 3.47 lakh-Rs 3.83 lakh), Chevrolet Beat (priced Rs 3.41 lakh-Rs 4.43 lakh) and Ford Figo (Rs 3.49 lakh-Rs 3.99 lakh). According to Maruti India, the new wagon R has showcases the advancement the company has made in research and development and the ability to adapt from global platforms to Indian conditions.

The Maruti Wagon R which is already the second best selling car in India after Maruti Alto, has been updated with all new generation features and a powerful K-series engine, which makes it compatible to the BS-IV emission norms. According to the company, the launch of new Wagon R is important to Maruti Suzuki for many reasons as it demonstrates the growing research and development capability of the company.

The Maruti India had invested heavily (Rs 290 crore) in the production of the new Maruti Wagon R. the new model has replaced the previous Wagon R in 13 Indian cities where the new BS-IV emission norm has been implemented. It is going to be very tough for Maruti India to maintain its existing market share of more than 50 percent, as many major car makers around the world are aggressively planning to grab a significant market share in this highly competitive compact car segment. The upcoming small cars in this segment includes Nissan Micra in June this year, Toyota Etios in Dec 2010 and Honda new small car by March 2011.

It is to be noted here that Maruti India is working on its plans of launching a new small car which will be 100 per cent made in India, as Maruti India will use its self-sufficient Research & Development in the production of this car.
