Good news for all those who love the Mercedes Benz cars. The company is soon going to launch its new R-class model in India this festival season. Mercedes Benz has already opened up the bookings for its new series which is expected to be priced about Rs. 60 lakh. This price tag is quite hefty because the model is being imported as a completely built unit. Functionally, the car will be an alternative for Toyota Innova.
The R Class refers to the Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) class. It is the first full-sized multi-purpose vehicle ever produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was first seen at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show as the Vision GST (Grand Sports Tourer) concept, and the final production vehicle was shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The new model depicts a crossover between a sedan and a minivan rather than a usual SUV. The seven-seater MPV has already started deliveries in Europe and the US. Although the final features of the Indian model have not been unveiled yet but the overseas model which is expected to be imported in India has got a range of V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines. It also has a 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. There is an air suspension with self-levelling at the rear and an optional four-wheel-drive. Also available is a long wheelbase version.
The auto experts are still sceptic whether India will prove to be a good market for station wagon kind of vehicles and if there will be much Indian buyers for R-class luxury and brand image. The sources say that Mercedes Benz will only roll out the petrol variant R-class model in India. There doesn't seem to be a lot of competition for the new car in its segment. The car can be an exclusive and the first-only model. It is also said that the new car will surely be placed somewhere between Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. Earlier this year, the company had launched Mercedes Benz E 200 CGI BlueEfficiency and E-Class Cabriolet in India.
The R-Class is built on the W251 chassis and is assembled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Mexico City. It is priced between the M-Class and the GL-Class. It was initially marketed by Mercedes-Benz as a Sports Cruiser and later as a Family Tourer”.
