The Mercedes-Benz G Class now gets a new more powerful diesel variant in India as the G400d. It is offered in two new iterations – G400d Adventure and G400d AMG Line, as a replacement to the G350d variants which were sold earlier. Both new variants of the G Class are equally priced at Rs 2.55 crore (ex-showroom pan India). Customers can book either of these SUVs for a token amount of Rs 1.5 lakh. Here an overview of what’s on offer.
How Are They Different From Each Other?
G400d Adventure Edition
The G400d Adventure Edition is said to be specially configured for India. This special edition of the SUV gets many adventure specific add-ons such as a roof rack, removable ladder at the rear, 5-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels and a full size spare wheel mounted at the tailgate.
The G400d Adventure Edition comes in a total of 25 colour options, including four new exclusive colours – Sand non-metallic, Vintage Blue non-metallic, Travertine Beige metallic and South Seas Blue metallic.

G400d AMG Line
The G400d AMG Line is not to be confused with the G-Wagen AMG performance SUV, but it is a sportier-looking version of the G Class. The highlights of this trim include Nappa leather upholstery, sporty multifunction steering wheel, 20-inch alloy wheels and stainless steel spare wheel cover.
Other features offered with the Mercedes’ luxury off-roader include multibeam LED headlamps, Burmester surround sound system, 64 colour ambient lighting and a sliding sunroof.
Both Have Equal Offroad Capabilities
The G Class has always been known for its hardcore offroading capabilities, and that continues with these new variants. It is based on a steel ladder frame chassis and offers a ground clearance of 241mm with a water-wading capacity of 700mm.
It also gets a “G Mode” mode specifically for offroading, which engages one of the three differential locks (or the low range) regardless of any driving mode selected. In this mode, it adapts the chassis damping, steering inputs and accelerator response to avoid unwanted gearshifts.

Powertrain Details
The new G400d is powered by the same OM656 inline six cylinder diesel engine which now has an output of 330PS and 700Nm. That’s enough for the G Class to sprint from nought to 100kmph in just 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 210kmph.
Green Details of A Diesel SUV
Mercedes-Benz states that 41 components weighing 35.9kg in the G400d are made of high-quality recycled plastics. Furthermore, eco-friendly materials are employed inside, such as coconut fibre with latex emulsion used for backrest cushioning and a wood fibre composite used for the substructure of inside door panels.
Deliveries & Rivals
The deliveries for new G Class are expected to start from October 2023, based on the allocations. Mercedes-Benz has stated that existing customers will get exclusive first access to book the G400d. In India, the G Class takes on the Land Rover Defender and Toyota Land Cruiser.
