2016 Skoda Superb

Czech automaker, Skoda has finally launched it’s flagshhip for the Indian market - the Skoda Superb. The luxury barge starts at a sticker price of Rs. 22.68 lacs (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and will go head to head against the likes of the Toyota Camry and the yet to be launched Honda Accord.

The new Superb broke cover in Prague last year and the Indian market has waited with bated breath ever since. Jozef Kaban (designer of the Bugatti Veyron) now heads Skoda’s design division. The razor sharp lines and the taut proportions are a testimony to his designing  prowess. The face is characterised by sharp lines on the bumper. The signature Skoda grille is flanked by massive projector headlamps that house an ‘L’ shaped DRL. The DRL acts as the turn indicator too!  Compared to the current generation, the new Superb sure looks menacing. The silhouette houses an arrow straight line that cuts across the doors and vanishes into the tail-lights. The wheelbase stands at 2841mm, which is a whopping 80mm more than the outgoing version. The new Superb gets 17” wheels (in two different designs) depending on variants. The rear rounds up the clean design really well; with sharp tail-lamps bearing the company’s signature ‘C’ motif.

Mr Sudhir Rao, Chairman and Managing Director ŠKODA AUTO India said, “We are delighted to introduce the new Superb as it continues the success story of the brand’s top model range in India. This product demonstrates our aspirations in the automotive industry by offering a superlative ownership experience and a great value proposition for our customers. In terms of technology and safety standards; it raises the benchmark and leads the way into the future for the brand, in this market.”

The interiors of the Superb are known to be drenched in luxury. The new one simply ups the ante! The legroom and headroom at the rear has been increased compared to the outgoing generation. There’s a host of technology at disposal too! The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable. Moreover, it also gets a memory function that can save 3 seating positions (along with the corresponding position of the ORVMs). It also features a 3 zone climate control system to set different temperatures for the front and the rear passengers. Then there’s the new 6.5” Touchscreen Infotainment system that gets Smartlink as standard. The L&K variant of the Superb will also get a Canton Sound System that has 12 speakers including a subwoofer in the boot. Speaking of the boot, luggage space is a whopping 625 litres, which can be extended up to  1760 litres by folding the rear bench away. The boot can be opened with just a swipe of the leg under the rear bumper too, just like the expensive Volvos and Range Rovers! It also gets a host of feel-good factors such as ambient lighting, a plethora of storage spaces strewn around the cabin including a tablet holder in the rear, removable LED torch in the boot and so on!

Mr. Ashutosh Dixit, Director – Sales, Service & Marketing ŠKODA AUTO India, elaborated on the all new Superb and said, “The ŠKODA Superb’s new design establishes the emotional power of the brand and will attract customers from higher segments. This new Superb is a masterpiece, its generous dimensions, innovative assistance systems for safety, comfort and ‘Simply Clever’ details certainly make it a leader in its segment. We are confident that this Superb will elevate the brand further in India.”

The Superb will be available with two tried and tested engines - the 1.8 TSi and the 2.0 TDi. While the petrol TSi motor is available with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic; the diesel will come mated to a 6-speed DSG only. The petrol motor puts out 180PS and 320Nm of torque, ARAI rated fuel efficiency stands at 14.12km/l (MT) and 14.67km/l (AT). The diesel, on the other hand, is good for 177PS and 350Nm with a claimed mileage of 18.19km/l. On the safety front, the Superb gets disc-brakes all round and 8 airbags.
