Will be offered with a mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid powertrain instead
Volvo has confirmed that it will not launch a diesel-powered version of its upcoming S60 sedan. The Swedish carmaker also confirmed that all its cars will be offered either as a mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or battery electric vehicle. The luxury carmaker had earlier stated that it will not introduce any new diesel engines in its portfolio.
Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars said, “We will phase out cars with an internal combustion engine with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment.”

Hence, the third-gen S60 will initially be available with a range of 4-cylinder Drive-E petrol engines and two petrol plug-in hybrid versions, followed by mild-hybrid versions next year.
Like the outgoing model, the third-gen S60 will take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Jaguar XE and the Audi A4. It is based on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, which also underpins the S90, XC90 and the XC60. Related: 2019 Volvo V60 Previews New India-Bound S60 Sedan
Volvo will showcase the third-gen S60 towards the end of this year. The Swedish carmaker already sells the second-gen S60 here, which is priced at Rs 38.51 lakh (ex-showroom India). It remains to be seen whether Volvo will launch the S60 in India in 2019 or wait until 2020, when BSVI norms are enforced across the country. Since it’s going to be a non-diesel offering, we expect the new S60 to come with mild-hybrid tech with a petrol engine to compete against its diesel-powered rivals in India.
