The latest trend in the automobile industry is downsizing the displacement of a petrol motor, incorporating a turbocharger and then what you get is power equivalent to the bigger blocks. Besides, there is an improvement in the fuel efficiency of upto 15-20% along with a surge in torque! The second generation Hyundai i20 is scheduled to meet the world at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The new car has been spotted countless times being tested fully camouflaged on Indian as well as global tarmacs.
Speaking of the engines, the new i20 is likely to feature Hyundai's 1.0 liter Kappa T-GDi or the 1.2 liter T-GDi 3-4 cylinder turbo charged inter-cooled petrol motors. The 1.0 liter T-GDi produces power in between 100 to 120bhp similar to Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost territory. However, the 1.2 liter T-GDi is 4-cylinder motor and is powerful compared to 1.0L and produces power similar to Hyundai's 1.6L VTVT engine. Apart from this, the 1.4 liter CRDI diesel from the current one is expected to be retained.
The i20 will receive radically new shape and design, the car is following Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0; currently seen in the latest Santa-Fe SUV. The i20 will be soon launched in India after its world preview at Paris in October. By the end of next year, most of the competitors in the premium hatchback space will be powered by turbo-charged petrol units, namely, Revotron powered Bolt from Tata and ECOnetic powered nex-gen Ford Figo. Happy turbo days for petrol heads!!
