The next-gen Hyundai i20 was spied without any covers just before it's launch scheduled in September; But the real question arises, is this the Grand i20? The Korean automaker has been testing extensively the next-gen hatch across the globe including India while the launch is reportedly slated to be in September 2014.
Moreover, the company is likely to name it Grand i20 seeing the success of Grand i10 while keeping i10. Furthermore, the current i20 is doing brilliant for the Korean major, selling in-between 3000-4000 units monthly. Speaking in this context, the new hatch might adorn a name Grand i20!
What Makes the Next-Gen i20 Appealing!
- The hatch is completely new offering from ground-up, featuring Hyundai 'Fluidic' design language version 2.0. The vehicle traces its roots from the Hyundai Santa-FE and Grand i10.
- Speaking of the design, the hatch looks bigger, wider and more mature than the current one. It features wrap-around head and taillamps, inverted trapezoidal grille and sharp edges.
- Day-time-running-LEDs which the current car debuted in this segment, will be on board in the new i20 alongwith what it seems like from the spy shots sexy looking LED tailamps!
- The C-pillar of the hatch is blacked-out too, seems like a trend nowadays with Tata Bolt and Honda Mobilio featuring similar layout. The spied images also reveals that the top-end variant of the hatch will feature diamond cut alloys.
- As expected, the vehicle will set new standards in the segment similar to what the current i20 did when it entered the market in 2008. When the new-gen will launch it will rival with 2014 Fiat Punto EVO, 2014 VW Polo and Maruti Suzuki Swift.
- The current i20 is pretty well loaded, retaining the current vehicle's smart features like auto headlamps and wipers, the next-gen i20 will take it to next level with upgraded infotainment system (might be a touch screen one), rear AC vents, etc.
- On the safety front, the hatch will continue the legacy of the i20 like 6 airbags, ABS + EBD, clutch-start, etc.
- Mechanically, the hatch is likely to retain the same set of engines.
- The 1.4 liter CRDI churning out 88.8bhp and 220Nm of max torque mated to a 6-speed manual transmission while Hyundai might introduce an AT in diesel as well this time.
- On the petrol front, seeing the competition the next-gen i20 might get Hyundai T-Gdi turbo petrol engine. Apart from this the regular i20 powertrains will be on board.
