The car will make its world debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in October.
The next-gen SsangYong has been spied recently (inside-out) before its official world debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Details about the upcoming Rexton were first reported by a European publication, including the official sketches of the SUV. This will be the first substantial upgrade of the Rexton since its inception in late 2001 and will be the second important product from ground-up under the ownership of Mahindra & Mahindra after the India bound SsangYong Tivoli.
What we know so far about the 2017 Rexton is that it will be based on an entirely new chassis, though, continuing with the ladder frame approach. Reportedly, the new chassis will help the SUV to shed nearly 50kg compared to the current vehicle and is also expected to improve its ride and handling. Speaking of the design, as seen in the official sketches and spy shots, the new Rexton does not resemble the boxy ongoing car; the next-gen SUV is sharper and flamboyant.
Mechanically, it will be unveiled with the existing 2.2-litre diesel motor, which made its debut last year in the European market with the current-gen Rexton (it comes with a 2.7-litre diesel motor in India). This engine will be mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic (essentially a Mercedes-Benz’s 7G-Tronic). Petrol will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged motor and will be introduced at a later stage.
The sales of the second-gen Rexton will begin around early next year in Europe and the Mahindra-SsangYong is expected to make its Indian debut the very same year.
