How does the upcoming Nissan compare against its rivals on paper?
Update (02/12/2020): Nissan has launched the Magnite with prices beginning from Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Read more about it here.
Nissan has made a late entry in the sub-4m SUV segment with the promising Magnite. But however promising it looks, the Magnite still has to fend off competition from eight rivals. So, how well equipped is it? This spec comparison should be an indicator of possibilities before we compare these cars in the real world.

Nissan is yet to reveal the specific dimensions of the Magnite. However, it is based on the Renault Triber’s platform and that leaves the possibility of a similar wheelbase for the Magnite. The boot space has been revealed by Nissan officially.

We’ve only taken the petrol engines of the rivals since the Magnite will be a petrol-powered model only.

Most Powerful: Ford EcoSport
Torquiest: Mahindra XUV300
The above figures of the Magnite are indicative as Nissan is yet to reveal official figures. It is expected to get a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol which delivers 72PS/96Nm in the Triber. On the other hand, the figures of the 1.0-litre turbo come from the Thai-spec Nissan Sunny which features the same unit.
If the above-mentioned numbers are anything to go by, the Magnite’s naturally aspirated engine will be the smallest, with the least power and torque of the lot. Even in the turbocharged guise, it will have the least power beside other similar engines. In terms of gearbox choices, the Magnite joins the Venue and Sonet in offering an automatic (CVT) with the turbocharged engines.
The Nissan won’t offer a diesel engine with the Magnite just like the Urban Cruiser and the Vitara Brezza. Those eyeing a diesel automatic have to pick from the XUV300, Nexon and the Sonet which happens to have the most sophisticated two-pedal system in the league.

The entire lot of these SUVs are fitted with acceptable levels of equipment for the price point. The Magnite does offer a fair bit of equipment but the only thing unique here is the 360 degree parking camera. But it does miss out on a sunroof and multiple airbags which is seen on several of the rivals. The most feature-loaded offering in the segment will still be the Kia Sonet.

*expected price range
The Nissan Magnite will be hard pressed to do something unique to catch a buyer’s attention in this extremely crowded space. For that, we expect it to get the lowest possible price tag among its rivals while the top variant could have a sub Rs 10 lakh price tag, making it the most affordable lineup among its rivals.
