Buoyed by the booming response for its recently launched premium hatchback Nissan Micra in India, the Japanese auto giant is now gearing-up for the launch of the sedan version of this car in India by 2011. The new Nissan Micra sedan would be 4.4 meter long and will possibly be placed in the price segment of Rs 6.5 to 8 lakh. The entry level sedan segment is a volume driven segment which hosts a number of best-selling cars in the Indian market including Maruti Swift Dzire, Volkswagen Vento, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna and Chevrolet Aveo.
The company has already announced that it will launch a diesel version of Nissan Micra in India by the last quarter of this year. With this, it is also developing an India bound ultra low cost car in partnership with its global partner Renault and India's leading two-wheeler maker Bajaj. However, the development work on this model is in its initial stage and the company is still conducting the feasibility study on the low cost project.
The Nissan Micra model is currently built at company's Chennai plant where it has invested heavily (Rs 45 billion) in partnership with Renault. The Chennai production facility of the company has a scalable annual manufacturing capacity of 400,000 units. The company is aiming to produce about 80,000 units of this car in the first year. The company is also eying to make Micra its flagship export model from India to over 100 countries including Europe, the Middle-East and Africa.
