Indian government has recently relaxed the norms and now one can import car to India of luxury segment cars from the countries from where the cars are not originated or assembled. According to the previous norms for import car to India of luxury segment from the countries other then their manufacturing countries or assembling countries was not allowed.
This notification permits cars of more then $40,000, with an engine capacity of more than 3000 cc for vehicle which have petrol run engines and 2500 cc for vehicles with diesel engines, to be imported from any country, even where it may not be produced. This type of import was not allowed earlier in India.
The decision of the government is facing strong opposition from many car makers and industry bodies like Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP). According to the SIAM officials the decision has taken without taking SIAM into consideration.
According to the Mr. Kronschnabl these new norms could increase grey market imports. Many of the models may get imported in the domestic market without sufficient back up with parts for service and support. This may make it difficult for consumers, (and) also ruin the brand image of the model,” said Mr Kronschnabl.
Although most of the foreign car manufacturers opposed the decision but some car manufacturers welcomed this decision like Toyota Kirloskar Motor India. “Earlier we could import cars that had to meet both the conditions of European emission norms and of being produced in that country. But now with the country of origin clause no longer required, we can import it from Japan,” said Mr Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director (Marketing), Toyota Kirloskar Motor India.
