For long, rumors have been doing the rounds that Volkswagen is working on bringing out a small SUV based on its popular selling model – the Polo. Lately it has been confirmed by VW officials that they are working on developing this SUV to counter the Nissan Juke. It is said that the new SUV will be under the Tiguan and will be based on VW’s MQB architecture which is used on many of the other cars built by the German automaker.
Commenting on the brand’s plan to launch at least one SUV in each segment, board member for technical development, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neuser said: “In the future we will have a minimum of one SUV in each segment - from the top-line SUV (Touareg) to MQB-based models and a number of derivatives including a Golf SUV and a Polo SUV. Core markets for the Polo SUV will be China, South America and Europe”.
Volkswagen had displayed the T-ROC concept at last year’s Geneva Motor Show, and the Tiguan based sub-compact SUV at last year’s Indian Auto Expo as well as at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show. Though the company hasn’t decided yet, if these models will hit the production lines, and even if they do, a timeline for the same hasn’t been mentioned. The Volkswagen Polo based SUV will cater more to a premium segment of SUVs rivaling Honda’s HR-V in the global market. For India though, the Tiguan based SUV makes more sense given the market characteristics. Whether it will make its way to India or not, we’ll just have to wait and watch.
